Love the parentheses-lizard approach! Maybe even another pair of parentheses could make it clearer... what are the tiny symbols scattered around the lizard? Looks like "y o o c" or something.

it's just lizard's legs.

Feel free to improve the image :)

i played with idea of 'l i s p' letters as lizard's legs: Image
IMO, the image became less lizard-like.

this is lizard made from two parentheses.
That's a contender. :)

A quick Google turned this up:
http://www.lisp.org/img/lisp-big.gif

It'd be possible to shrink that down, but I'm not sure how it would look.

Very 1987.
You could render it in SVG, and it should scale alright then.

Yea, I think I'd rather go for something very 2008 instead. :D Let's do all we can to portray that fact that Lisp is actually something a modern programmer would want to use, not just a retro-language to be learned for historical reasons only.

I like the Planet Lisp one. How about something similar, but with something to indicate "discussion", e.g.
( )
or
( :?: )
or
( :o ) (except not so surprised-looking).

Nice! That's a possibility, too. I sort of like the surprised one. Yes, Lisp is that blow-your-mind programming language. :)

 Indeed.
