Re: Looking for a Project to Help Me Gain a LISP Vocab
My first programming project of any significant size was to write a Connect 4 game, with an AI player, and I'd highly recommend that, especially if you are interested in playing around with a bit of AI. Whether you choose Connect 4 or not, I second the motion to start with a small game. For whateve...

Re: In need of user-friendly Lisp interpreter
I started teaching myself Lisp just this week, and I've hit my first major hurdle: I can't seem to find an interpreter/compiler that works for me. I have tried four of them so far, and I'm assuming they're four of the more popular ones. I'm not sure. I have tried the following interpreters: Poplog ...

Re: Tragedy of the commons
As for the price of pollution- I agree that markets do not, and probably cannot, properly price certain externalities. I am not a radical, nor am I an anarchist. So I am not advocating throwing tort law over, entirely. Here's a good article on the subject (by an anarchist who is also not advocating...

Re: Experience of Learning Lisp
How long did it take you to get started? Dunno quite what you mean by that. In my second semester of Uni I took a class taught in scheme. I learned about as much scheme as I had to to do well in the class. The next semester I took an AI class taught in CL ( yes, I am an old man- that class is almos...

Re: Where to start?
If you want to have a full-featured CL environment right off the bat I would highly recommend one of two setups. Either use SBCL on some variant of Debian Linux (Ubuntu is probably the most user-friendly) or use Lispworks Personal Edition with Edi Weitz's starter pack. There's nothing actually wrong...

Re: Tragedy of the commons
Are you presuming a corrupt system and starting from there? Yes, of course. I made that clear earlier. Now, if you want to compare an ideal regulatory regime with a perfect market, go ahead. But if you want to compare regulatory regimes with market mechanisms in the real world then you have to assu...

Re: Tragedy of the commons
tayssir: "Planned economies can use price systems." How can they? I think you're missing the point of the pricing mechanism. The example I gave, Parecon , is a decentralized form of planned economy which happens to use a price mechanism, supply and demand curves, features worker self-mana...
